Expo 2010 @ Shanghai China

Random food @ Shanghai

Although it is not completely different from the Zhejiang coastal province, Shanghai have some authentic cuisine, that is a drunken (in alcohol) steamed or raw dishes. In addition mix of sugar and soy sauce are most normal like "sweet and sour pork ".

One can get almost anything… cold sesame noodles, seaweed, cucumber, shrimps and pork soup dumplings, pork stewed with eel... even some 1930’s cocktail like grasshopper or Mai Tai.

Enjoy the pictures and help me to fill the text :)

Shintori @ Shanghai

Unmarked door in the gray concrete wall lead to an beautiful bamboo garden; only revealing clue is bouncer at the front door…

this hides a massive but minimalist Japanese restaurant which is very easy to miss.

High ceilings, dramatic glass and sushi chef tables with modernist flower arrangements...

We had a "Golden Year Of The Tiger" menu washed down with a bottle of champagne Taittinger.

Three Delights - Vinegar flavored sea eel, fig in walnut sauce and plum sauce-flavored crown daisy and eniki mushroom

Clear Soup - Crab meat egg tofu

Assorted seasonal sashimi

Grilled Dish - pan fried beef tenderloin in Japanese tomato sauce

Deep-Fried Dish - Shrimp tempura

Rice & Soup - Udon in soyabeen milk and miso sauce

Dessert - Green tea pudding with red bean bisque

Although the food was not very creative, it has been for sure amusing. All ingredients fresh and delicious. The best things I had was the grilled dish. Grilled over a stone fire and picking up the smell from bamboo… just fantastic and soft and tender. The green tea pudding - very light, fresh and perfect desert from my point of view.

Probably there are better Japanese restaurants in Shanghai, but if one takes in account full package approach, Shintori is highly recommended.

XinJiShi @ Shanghai

Probably one of the most popular Shanghai-style restaurant and recommended by Michelin guide is Xinjishi. We waited quite long just to be sited and than even longer to actually get some food…

which serves a delicious braised pork with brown sauce, sweet and with equal parts of meat and fat... irresistable and also terribly not healthy...

an appetizer made of stuffed red dates stuffed with a glutenous rice; really interesting/strange savory-sweet mixture...

perfectly steamed vegetables...

seriously spicy tiger prawns with chili peppers...

and of course, juicy Shanghai dumplings made with pork, ginger and steamed to perfection; especially appreciated by my friend Dame.

Not really impressed at the speed of the service but the tastiness of the food and presentation was on the better side.

A perfect day @ Shangai Art World

It’s obvious that contemporary art painters from China have bunch of new ideas, sometimes with surrealistic depiction… it’s fun to realize that all these are in the spirit of the modern Chinese society.

Starting in Taikang Lu, an arts and crafts enclave in the heart of the French Concession...

Where one can see some amazing work by Mr. Fish using traditional “Chinese Red” and painting layer by layer…

or something more classical...

continuing in MOCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art)...

at the ReFlection oF Minds...

autonomous breathing...

warmed up ice...

food in the air...

catching a sight on the Japanese pop art at SWFC…

Japan: kingdom of characters...

with sexy context ;)

It’s time for something much more serious; Shanghai’s blossoming arts district M50...

fundamentally China has formed an independent system of art…

fueled with a political criticism...

and erotic…

which reflect realistic situation.
